Rockin' Robin Roberts, born on November 23, 1940, in New York City, is an American singer best known for his contributions as a founding member and vocalist of the legendary rock and roll band, The Fabulous Wailers. Roberts' musical journey began in earnest during his teenage years in Tacoma, Washington, where he discovered rhythm and blues music and started performing with local bands such as the Bluenotes.

Roberts' most notable claim to fame is his earliest cover version of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie," which was recorded in 1960 and released under his name on the Etiquette record label the following year. This recording is significant for its impact on music history, as it paved the way for later versions by other bands like The Kingsmen that eventually turned "Louie Louie" into a national hit in 1963. Roberts' dynamic stage presence and powerful voice made him an essential part of The Fabulous Wailers, which was known for its electrifying live performances.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Roberts was also an accomplished student who attended the University of Washington, the University of Puget Sound, and Oregon State University, graduating in 1964 with a master's degree in biochemistry and later becoming an assistant professor. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1962 to 1967 but abandoned his musical career during this period in favor of pursuing academia full-time.

Roberts' legacy extends beyond his musical achievements, as he is also remembered for his contributions to the world of professional wrestling. His father, Grizzly Smith, was a prominent wrestler, and Roberts followed in his footsteps by becoming a wrestler herself under the ring name Rockin' Robin. This second career allowed her to continue performing and entertaining audiences, even though she had left the music scene.

Tragically, on December 22, 1967, at the age of just 27, Roberts lost his life in a head-on automobile accident while traveling the wrong way on a divided freeway south of San Francisco. His passing marked the end of an exciting and influential chapter in rock and roll history. Today, Roberts is remembered fondly as a talented singer who left behind an indelible mark on music with his rendition of "Louie Louie," as well as for his contributions to professional wrestling as Rockin' Robin. His grave marker in Tacoma Cemetery was replaced in 1998 with a more elaborate memorial that highlights his musical legacy, serving as a testament to the enduring impact he had on the world of music and beyond.
