Alexandre Levy (1864-1892) was a Brazilian composer, pianist, and conductor, born in São Paulo to a musically active Jewish family from France. Levy's father founded the most important music business of the city and was himself a clarinetist. Levy is considered the first known musician to die at the age of 27, an unfortunate milestone that earned him a prestigious award in his hometown today.

Levy was a pioneer in fusing classical composition with Brazil's popular folk music and rhythms. He began composing piano works as early as 1880, with the Fantasia para dois pianos a partir de temas da ópera O Guarany, and continued until just before his death in 1892. His extensive catalog includes numerous Impromptus, Capriches, Mazurkas, Polkas, Scherzos, Etudes, Romances, and Tangos, among others. One of his most famous works, Tango Brasileiro, was later borrowed by the French composer Darius Milhaud for his ballet Le Bœuf sur le toit in 1942.

Levy's legacy lies in his innovative approach to merging classical music with Brazilian folk traditions. Although he died young at the age of 27, his influence extended beyond his own time and continues to be felt in Brazilian music today. His compositions demonstrate a deep understanding of both European classical music and the unique rhythms and melodies of Brazilian popular music. Levy's pioneering spirit paved the way for future generations of Brazilian composers who sought to incorporate indigenous musical elements into their work.

The tragic circumstances of Levy's early death and his association with the "27 Club" have only served to heighten interest in his life and music. Despite dying young, Levy's impact on Brazilian classical music is significant, as he helped establish a distinctly Brazilian sound that continues to be celebrated and influenced by musicians today. His works are a testament to his innovative spirit and his deep connection to both European classical music and the rich musical traditions of Brazil.
